Organic design principles
Terra provides a comprehensive interior design service across high-end residential, hospitality and select commercial projects in Cape Town and beyond.
Our involvement can begin at the earliest architectural stages of a project or with an existing building requiring a complete interior transformation. We work from initial concept and space planning through interior architecture, material specification, bespoke joinery, lighting, furniture and final installation.
By considering the technical and decorative elements of an interior together, we maintain a clear design direction throughout the project and ensure that each element contributes to a coherent whole.
INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE
& SPACE PLANNING
We develop the spatial framework of an interior, considering proportion, circulation, functionality and the relationship between rooms. Where appropriate, we work alongside the project architect from an early stage to ensure the architecture and interiors develop cohesively.
MATERIALS & FINISHES
We develop material palettes suited to the architecture, location and character of each project. Finishes are selected not only for appearance, but for their performance, durability and the way they will age over time.
LIGHTING DESIGN
Lighting is considered from the outset as part of the spatial and material design. We develop lighting concepts and fixture selections in coordination with the architecture, electrical design and intended atmosphere of each space.
FF&E & INTERIOR CURATION
We specify and procure furniture, lighting, rugs, textiles, art and objects to complete each interior. Existing and new pieces can be combined to create spaces that feel collected, personal and appropriate to the architecture.
BESPOKE JOINERY & FURNITURE
Terrā designs custom kitchens, cabinetry, vanities, built-in furniture and individual furniture pieces as an integral part of the interior. Each element is developed specifically for its setting and detailed through to manufacture.
hospitality interior design
Hospitality interiors are not residential design scaled up. A restaurant grout line has to survive ten years of grease and cleaning. A hotel sofa absorbs twenty guests a week, not one. We design boutique hotels, restaurants, wine estates, and hospitality spaces around those realities, balancing guest experience, operational durability, and brand expression, not only how the room looks on opening night.
residential INTERIOR design
Most residential interior design firms handle decoration. We handle decoration as one layer of a process that runs from concept to completion: spatial planning, material specification, joinery direction, lighting design, FF&E, and styling. The work starts with how a home is structured and ends with how it performs at year ten, long after the last styling shot is taken.
DESIGN DOCUMENTATION & PROJECT DELIVERY
Our designs are developed into detailed documentation for pricing, manufacture and construction. We work closely with architects, consultants, contractors, suppliers and specialist makers throughout implementation to protect the integrity of the design through to completion.
